Dad's Visit Ends, Remodling Progress Made

My dad left this morning after staying with me and working on home improvement projects at my house for the last 10 days. It is somewhat relieving to have my (very small) home back to myself, but at the same time I'm sad to see him go; we'd fallen into a nice routine, and I know that the somewhat odd time we spent together living and working in fluctuating levels of harmony and frustration are times I will always remember and cherish down the road.

We didn't get everything done on my wish list, but we completely overhauled the bathroom and "office," which were the primary rooms with items begging for attention. Every square inch of those rooms was cleaned and painted (I added a persimmon red accent wall in the office which I love!), and the office was totally refurnished with new shelving and a funky chair to replace the old desk and rolling file drawer. Dad installed all new hardware in the bath and meticulously repaired/replaced the walls and molding where the dogs had chewed as puppies when kept in the bathroom.

In addition two cracks in the paint/sheet rock in the den were repaired, but we didn't end up having time to repaint the kitchen and den, so that remains on my to do list. It wasn't urgent, but now there are two big lines of spackling so I'll want to do that sooner than later. Also we didn't get new curtains hung in my bedroom as I'd intended, though I bought a curtain rod.

And though we bought some great new furniture at Ikea for the office (Expedit shelves) and bedroom (Hemnes sofa table which I put at the end of my bed), apparently they discontinued the line which I used for my media center, so I couldn't just replace the two pieces the dogs chewed. Now I'm back to square one on what to do about that; I'll probably replace the whole center with the new Hemnes line I suppose, but I dread buying and assembling that myself, not to mention disposing of my current damaged Ikea media center.

I also still need to deep clean my bedroom carpet and want to replace the lighting in the kitchen and bath and reorganize my closet and coat closet. So there is plenty more to be done, but I'll have to get to it on my own - or pay somebody to do it for me.

It feels weird to go from my dad warning me not to lose the metal tool that opens cans of paint (they charge $0.49 for those if you have to replace it) to considering paying $750 for somebody to paint my den and kitchen for me. Dad looked horrified when I mentioned that as an option, but the truth is it seems worth it to me. It would take me days to do it myself and the results would probably be lackluster. Doing just the bathroom and office was a multi day effort with both of us working at it (and dad handled the more difficult edging and molding).

He did recommend I hire an electrician to come in and replace any light fixtures though. And I'll have to get somebody in there to address the bedroom carpet too at some point. So in short, I still have a long way to go, but we made big progress and spent some great quality time together too! Plus I saved a ton of money while he was here. I didn't go out once or miss a day at the gym or have a sip of alcohol while he was here. Plus I was shopping around at stores like Crate and Barrel for furniture, but he loves Ikea, and so I ended up getting new shelving for about $1250 less than I was willing to pay.
